This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical physical horror, but inside Together lies a profound meditation about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when the couple relocate from the big city to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they still love one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
