The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG Ever

The buzz around The Game Awards was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer packed with intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it sparked the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, branching plots, and flexible progression—elements that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs you can achieve with a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be approached in diverse methods, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
